Paper Trading

Paper trading lets you practice trading strategies with virtual funds - no real money at risk. It's the perfect way to test bots, learn the platform, and validate strategies before going live.

What is Paper Trading?

Paper trading simulates real market conditions using virtual funds. When you create a paper exchange:

  • You receive $10,000 USDT in virtual balance
  • Trades execute at real market prices
  • P&L is calculated based on actual price movements
  • No real funds are ever at risk

Note: Paper trading uses real-time market data from the selected exchange. Your virtual trades reflect actual market conditions.

Market Simulation

Paper trading simulates:

  • ✅ Market orders (instant fill at market price)
  • ✅ Limit orders (fill when price reached)
  • ✅ Position sizing and leverage
  • ✅ P&L calculation
  • ✅ Margin requirements

Not simulated:

  • ❌ Slippage (orders fill at exact price)
  • ❌ Liquidity constraints
  • ❌ Partial fills
  • ❌ Funding fees

Note: Paper trading results may differ from live trading due to execution differences. Always start live trading with small positions.

Refilling Paper Balance

If you deplete your paper balance (or want a fresh start):

Locate Refill Button

On your paper exchange card, look for the Refill button.

Check Cooldown Status

Refills have a 24-hour cooldown between uses.

Confirm Refill

Click Refill and confirm. Your balance resets to $10,000 USDT.

Cooldown Timer

After refilling:

  • A 24-hour timer starts
  • The refill button shows remaining time
  • You cannot refill again until the timer expires

Note: The cooldown prevents abuse and encourages thoughtful strategy testing.

Best Practices

Testing Duration

Run paper tests for a meaningful period:

  • Minimum: 1 week
  • Recommended: 2-4 weeks
  • Ideal: Full market cycle

Note: Short tests may not reveal how your strategy performs across different market conditions.

Realistic Settings

Configure paper trading to match live intentions:

  • Same leverage you'll use live
  • Same position sizing
  • Same stop loss/take profit levels

Track Performance

Monitor key metrics during paper testing:

  • Win rate
  • Average profit/loss per trade
  • Maximum drawdown
  • Sharpe/Sortino ratio

Document Learnings

Keep notes on:

  • What works and what doesn't
  • Settings that needed adjustment
  • Market conditions during tests

Transitioning to Live Trading

When paper results are satisfactory:

Verify Consistent Performance

Ensure your strategy shows:

  • Positive expected value
  • Acceptable drawdown
  • Consistent execution

Start Small

When going live:

  • Begin with 10-25% of intended position size
  • Gradually increase as confidence grows
  • Never risk more than you can afford to lose

Monitor Closely

First few live trades:

  • Watch execution in real-time
  • Compare to paper results
  • Adjust if significant differences appear

Scale Gradually

If live matches paper performance:

  • Increase position sizes slowly
  • Continue monitoring for divergence
  • Maintain risk management discipline

Limitations

Paper trading has inherent limitations:

No Slippage

Real trades may fill at different prices than expected, especially:

  • During high volatility
  • With large position sizes
  • In illiquid markets

No Funding Fees

Futures funding fees can significantly impact returns on held positions.

Perfect Fills

Paper orders always fill completely at the expected price. Real orders may:

  • Fill partially
  • Fill at worse prices
  • Fail due to liquidity

Psychological Differences

Trading real money feels different:

  • Emotional responses affect decisions
  • Fear and greed impact judgment
  • Paper success doesn't guarantee live success

Note: Treat paper trading seriously, but understand that live trading adds psychological challenges that virtual trading cannot simulate.
